A San Diego Romance

A San Diego Romance

A long weekend recently brought with it an unexpected, SPONTANEOUS*, getaway to San Diego. Scott started a new position after his fellowship, and proposed to the lovely Gabi, who has brought not only Portuguese into our lives, a shining personality, but also Acai. And for that Gabi, we are thankful!!!

We drove all night, and after a short nap, went into La Jolla Beach for a snorkel rendezvous with the yellow fish from Dr. Suess’ stories. Little did we know, we would be swimming alongside some incredibly playful sea lions. We would swim, and they would pop up underneath us or glide past us as if we were harmless bits of swaying seaweed. There were times that they wrestled so close that you could hear their breathing and playful noises as if they whispered it into your ear, and that sound then pin-balled its way down your chest. Sometimes a bubble of their breath would hit you in the belly, and most of the time you were frozen with awe even as they whipped dangerously close by. It was an incredible experience, and the rest of the weekend trailed behind it in a happy, kick back way.

Phantom Of the Opera was a beautiful and thrilling performance - and one that we have seen more than once. Everyone loved how the performances changed from city to city, and how the adaptations showed new perspectives on the Phantom. This one in particular was powerful, and the music was, as always, transcendental. Gabi too, enjoyed it. In fact, her favorite part was the humerous part, where the husband was sneaky and everyone laughed. Now, you might tilt your head at this and wonder what part she meant - and in truth, we still do not know to this day. Gabi, if you are reading this, you are ADORABLE!

The next day we went surfing, and the water and waves were spectacular. We succeeded in catching none, however, but I saw more hang-tens than ever. It was quintessential SoCal, and we marveled at the surfers that do this as a daily routine.

While Jamie left early, I happily spent another night with Gabi and Scott, watching movies and snuggling with Boo, Enzo, and Isaac. With all the boba and family time, we left San Diego belly full of love and family. We are so happy for the life and romance that Scott and Gabi are beginning in San Diego, and we look forward to many more adventures down south!

*Scott hates that Jamie and I are “Spontaneous”. Little does he know, it is that very nature that keeps his family together, and should show a, tinsy, winsy, bit more gratitude. I am not bitter, of course.
