The Inferno 2020
Some of us have been the Hell and back this year. After visiting Bryce Canyon, I can say it is beautiful there. This national park is stunning in such a unique way — its biblical. The geology is odd and grotesque even, but in a fascinating and exhilarating way. Walking down from the vista points and into Bryce Canyon Amphitheater was for us a network of trails in a steep decline. We walked amongst geological structures called ‘hoodoos’ that looked like sand-dripped castles, and the layers of color turned from crimson to honey in varying degrees.
Bryce Canyon was a day trip from Zion and Mossy Cave was one step further. We started with hiking the Queen’s Garden/Navajo Trail loop. It started along the wide rim of the amphitheater, and once we were at the base of the canyon, we climbed through archways and weaved through pine trees. The climb out of the canyon was the most breath-taking: Wall Street. This part of the trail serpentined up what felt like a crack in the Earth, so much so one felt like Orpheus transcending the depths of the underworld.
Everything about Bryce Canyon was other worldly. Large with deep recesses; scorched as if fire infused it; and a temptress to the imagination. Forget the hoodoo rhymes with voodoo — we were under its spell regardless.
